airfieldTHE MACHESNEY PARK STORY

Residents began a grass-roots incorporation movement in 1980 to form the Village. They did so in order to ensure residents were provided with quality municipal services, and to prevent adjacent cities from nibbling away at the attractive commercial properties in the area. In the winter of 1981, voters decided in a referendum to form the Village of Machesney Park, and the first Village officers were elected in the following spring of 1982. The name “Machesney Park” is derived from the former Machesney “Rockford” Airport and the area’s original informal name, North Park. Machesney Park was officially incorporated as a municipality in the State of Illinois on February 24, 1981, and recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2021.

Today, our original mission remains the same; to provide our residents with high-quality municipal services all while maintaining a relatively low cost of living. The Village is proud to levy no municipal property tax. Further, we partner with a number of regional agencies to provide utility and emergency services. These agencies include ComEd, Nicor Gas, North Park Public Water District, Four Rivers Sanitation Authority, Harlem-Roscoe Fire District, North Park Fire District, Northwest Fire District, and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department.
